You have most likely seen tons of pins on Pinterest talking about freezer cooking. You click the pin and scan the blog post. They are talking about freezer marathons that would require you to take a vacation day and spend $400 on food at Costco first. Not interested. Who has time for that?
What if I told you, that you could learn how to freezer cook even when you’re busy and don’t want to take a day off work to marathon cook?
Yes, you can learn to freezer cook without all of the overwhelm. You can actually freezer cook without taking a lot of extra energy… the easy way.
What is freezer cooking?
Freezer cooking, just in case you don’t know, is cooking a meal ahead of time and freezing it. Then whenever you want to eat, you just thaw and cook. Then you’re ready to go.
Why would you want to start freezer cooking?
Here are the benefits of freezer cooking:
Freezer cooking saves you so much time. You don’t have to worry about cooking and standing over the stove. You just pull it from the freezer and toss it into the oven to cook.
Most of the time. Every recipe has different directions, but most are precooked and you just need to reheat.
Saves you money
Freezer cooking saves you money because instead of hitting up the McDonald’s drive-thru lane again for the 3rd time this week, you go home and cook a freezer meal.
Your family gets the benefit of having a home-cooked meal and you get the benefit of eating a delicious meal without standing over the stove for hours.
You don’t have to cook every day
Some days you just don’t feel like cooking. On days like that, you can still have a delicious home-cooked meal.
Who doesn’t want to eat without having to cook?
That’s a mom’s dream.
How to freezer cook when you’re busy
Make double the amount of food you need when you cook dinner.
The easiest way to start freezer cooking is to make double the amount of food when you’re cooking and freeze half.
Now, I’m not necessarily talking about the whole meal. I’m just talking about the things that freeze well. There is a list of common things that freeze well below.
Make sure the food is freezer safe.
Make sure the meal is freezer-safe before doubling. You can reference the section below or you can just google it to check and see. There are tons of articles about freezer-safe foods out there.
Have supplies on hand to store the food
The supplies you need to freezer cook are
- aluminum pans
- aluminum foil
- freezer tape
- freezer bags
- permanent marker
- bag holder to keep bags upright when filling with liquids
Most of these items can be purchased at the dollar store. You don’t have to spend an arm and a leg on these.
You can just buy some extras to keep on hand so you can freeze your meals as you’re cooking.
Write the information on the container
The next thing you need to do write the following information on the storage container:
- Food name
- Cooking Instructions
What to not do when you’re starting out
Don’t go crazy
Don’t get so excited over the prospect of not cooking every day and cook a ton of meals at one time. I’ve been freezing meals for years now and I’ve never had a marathon freezer cooking day.
That’s not to say don’t have one, but just wait until you have some experience. Don’t try to cook 10 freezer meals in 2 hours the first week.
Don’t make it complicated
Don’t make it complicated. Just double your dinner and freeze it. You don’t need to have a full-on freezer cooking marathon.
Don’t get caught without supplies
The storage supplies are super cheap. You can stock up on aluminum pans at the dollar tree. Just buy 2-3 of a few different sizes.
You don’t have to go crazy and buy out the store, but you do want to have some supplies on hand.
Types of meals that typically freeze well
These meals and foods typically freeze well:
- Most casseroles
- Pasta dishes
- Taco meat
- BBQ meat
- Some baked side dishes
If you have a question about whether or not something will freeze well, just Google it.
Ingredients that typically don’t freeze well
If your dish has some of these ingredients, be careful about freezing:
- Plain cooked pasta- can be mixed in a dish
- Fried foods
- Anything with egg whites
- Fully cooked rice
- Cream-based sauces and soups
- Hard-boiled eggs
- Dishes with a lot of mayonnaise or sour cream
Again, if you’re unsure, Google it. Don’t let that scare you. You can find out anything on Google.
How long will freezer meals last
Freezer meals can last about 3-6 months depending on the ingredients. To ere on the side of caution, just say 3 months.
A huge indicator of something not being good anymore is freezer burn. It’s very important that you wrap up your meals tightly and securely to avoid freezer burn.
