If you are sick and tired of not feeling like your house is clean and can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel, this was written just for you. You are tired of your house looking rough just minutes after you cleaned it. Here are some tips to make your home feel tidier and make cleaning a whole lot easier. These are quick tips you can add to your daily routines to make you feel like your house is mostly tidy all of the time.
13 Cleaning Tips to Make Your Home Look Cleaner in Minutes
1.Make your bed
According to studies, making your bed can make you happier and more productive. It will also make your whole room feel cleaner and just look better. Making your bed can usually be done in under a minute and makes a big impact.
2. Take out the trash
The trash piling up is one of my pet peeves. It takes under a minute to take the trash out and it makes the whole room look so much cleaner.
3. Dirty dishes put away
I always have dirty dishes in the dishwasher. This helps people put the dishes immediately into the dishwasher. There is no need for them to sit in the sink until the evening. If it isn’t dishwasher safe, consider getting rid of it. I don’t keep dishes in my house that aren’t dishwasher safe.
Clean up immediately after dinner. Don’t think you are just sit down for a minute and get to it later. That rarely happens. Clean up the kitchen right after dinner. Not having dirty dishes everywhere makes the kitchen look so much better.
Do a load daily or wait and do it all in one day. Create a laundry routine that works for you. When the clothes are finished in the dryer, put them away immediately. Don’t let the laundry pile up. It’s hard to get motivated to do laundry when the mountain is taller than you.
5. Adapt the “Clean Enough” Motto
You don’t have to wait to clean before you can deep clean the whole house. You don’t have to wait to clean the kitchen until you scrub the inside of the fridge and oven. You don’t have to wait to clean the shower until you can clean the whole bathroom inside and out. Go with clean enough.
If you only have a few minutes to clean, ask yourself what can I do right now that will make the biggest impact? Like in the bathroom, clean the toilet and sink to make the biggest impact. Don’t wait until you can do it perfectly to start. Just start now and go with clean enough.
6. Enlist the help of your family
Give everyone in your family a list of tasks to do. You don’t have to do it all on your own. Even young children can help. Now granted, they won’t clean it like you would, but let them help and learn. They won’t get good at cleaning and making their bed if you are always doing it for them. Sometimes it is easier and quicker to just do it for them, but that doesn’t teach them anything.
7. Straighten up before bed
Straighten up every evening. This is a great one to get your family’s help with. While you are cleaning up from dinner, let your husband wipe down the table and the kids pick up their rooms, etc. Everyone helps and no one sits down until it is done.
8. Never leave the room empty-handed
If you are leaving a room, and something is out of place, take it back to its correct spot. This will help you slowly straighten up your house all day.
9. Automate your household
Automation is life-changing! Read about how to automate many of your household tasks here.
10. Clean the toilet
The toilet takes like 5 seconds to clean and it makes the whole bathroom feel cleaner when it’s clean. Just do a quick wipe down when your children are taking a bath.
11. Clean the floors
Get a Rumba Robot Vacuum (or at minimum a handheld vacuum) and a Swiffer mop. I love these tools. The robot vacuum runs on its own to clean up messes. The handheld vacuum and Swiffer mop work great as a cheaper alternative to clean up quick messes.
Declutter your house, then you won’t have so much stuff to clean. This one seems so simple and it is. It is lifechanging. You need to declutter. There isn’t a need to have 12 kid’s plates in your house when you only have 2 kids and do the dishes daily. Your children don’t need to have 500 toys when they might play with 5 regularly.
I recently decluttered my kid’s toys and it is a total game-changer. They would both mess up their entire rooms with 500 toys and then only play with a handful. I got so tired of the mess. I decluttered their toys and now they play so much better in their rooms. The rooms aren’t as dirty, and they can find their favorite toys.
Decluttering your house is amazing. I have slowly decluttered my entire 1500 square foot house and it feels so much larger. There is so much open space now! It’s like we moved to a bigger house and all we did was just declutter. We got rid of stuff and even excess furniture. Nothing was off-limits!
13. One-touch paper rule
We have a one-touch paper rule that is amazing at helping you clear your paper clutter. As soon as the mail or papers come in each day, we decide right then what to do with them. About 98% of them go into the trash and the rest are put away immediately. We used to be drowning in the paper every single day. I would move the pile from room to room and might get around to it about every 4-6 weeks or so then I would discover late bills, missed appointments, etc. Since we adopted the one-touch paper rule, we no longer have piles of paper everywhere. It is a total game changer!
These tips can help you keep your home straightened up and feel clean every day. I usually do most of these items daily and then deep clean on the weekend. This helps me feel like my house is always clean. When I do deep clean, I don’t have to worry about 2 hours of prep work beforehand. My house is always ready to clean mode and always looked picked up and straightened up.
