If your medical bills are outta control, this post is for you! You go to the mailbox every day to find yet another medical bill. The average American spends $5,000 out of pocket every single year for insurance costs. 32% of working Americans have medical debt. A great way to save money on medical bills is by getting them organized.
How on Earth do you keep track of all of these bills without going insane? You need to create a medical bills binder. You need to know what is coming in and out. If you don’t get a handle on it, it will just become out of control. It is crucial you get your medical bills organized asap.

Steps to Organize Medical Bills
1. Find all of the medical bills
Get all of your medical bills together. Look for them all over the house, your purse, or wherever you keep them. Go through the bills one by one and remove all of the junk. Just keep the billing statements. You don’t need any of the other “fluff” that comes with the bills like return envelopes and privacy statements.
2. Organize the pile of paper
A. Organize all of the stacks of paper by sender.
Put all the ones from Children’s Hospital in the one stack, the pediatrician in another stack, etc.
B. Organize the little piles by billing department.
If you get several bills from your Children’s Hospital, you might need to organize the pile farther. The bill will usually state the department name at the top. Our local Children’s Hospital will send bills that say Physician Billing & Facility Billing. These are different billing departments and you will handle them separately.
C. Organize by date
Organize each pile in date order.
3. By now, you might have several piles.
If you do, go ahead and put a paperclip, rubber band, turn them sideways, or sticky note, whatever, just put them in one pile but still divided out by billing office.
4 Start putting the documents into your binder.
Now that you are organized, start putting the documents into your medical bills binder. There will be a tab for each billing department. So, using the Children’s Hospital Billing example, it would have two divider tabs. One might say CH- Physician and the other CH-Facility.
Here is the order behind each divider tab for my binder:

Behind each tab:
First- a medical bill log (in FREE resource library)
Next- paperwork for each visit in date order.
Each visit is stapled together to keep it organized. So, I would have a bill from the doctor or hospital, receipt if I paid at the time of the appointment, and the insurance statement. These 2-3 items will be stapled together since it is all for one appointment.
The medical bill log looks similar to a check register and helps you keep track of what you owe and to whom.
5. Maintaining and purging your medical bill binder:
Keep only your outstanding bills in your medical binder. Once the bill is paid in full, you can keep it in a file cabinet/box at your house or scan it and save it digitally. Dropbox is the program I use to digitally save my documents. It’s free up to a certain size capacity and you have the ability to have folders to organize your files. You just scan it with your printer and save it on Dropbox in the folder.
